We were thrilled to join local host Calvin J. Worthen on Desert Soul Media’s Soul Star Live, KRDP’s flagship public affairs series. The program delves deep into issues shaping the Black and African-American community, examining news, current events, arts, culture, and wellness through a unique lens. Calvin’s thoughtful approach made our conversation one to remember as we reflected on our journey and the mission of At The Outlet, Inc. here in Phoenix.
During the interview, Calvin asked us to share how we found ourselves rooted in Phoenix’s vibrant community. Our journey, like many, was filled with twists and turns, but it led us to create a haven for youth and families in need of creative outlets and educational support. We spoke about At The Outlet, Inc.’s role in enriching Phoenix’s cultural and educational landscape through initiatives that blend performing arts, academic support, and social growth for all students. It’s deeply rewarding to be part of a city that values diverse perspectives and strives to foster inclusivity and opportunity.
Our conversation also touched on the importance of mental and physical wellness as business owners. The challenges of running a nonprofit in a fast-paced city can sometimes be overwhelming, yet we find strength in our mission and support from the Phoenix community. Sharing insights on how we cope—from creative outlets to a strong network of family, friends, and supporters—was a reminder that self-care is essential not only for our well-being but also for sustaining the work we do.
We are grateful to Soul Star Live and Calvin J. Worthen for offering a platform to discuss these vital issues. Our hope is that through conversations like these, we continue to uplift our community and encourage others to embrace both the rewards and challenges of building resilient, culturally rich spaces for growth and connection in Phoenix.
